CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Bring your business and operations acumen to NYC’s most impactful environmental nonprofit.

Urban Green Council, the local affiliate of the U.S. Green Building Council, is looking for a dynamic change agent to fill its newly created Chief Operating Officer (COO) position.

Urban Green is NYC’s go-to organization on environmental building policy, twice managing blue ribbon commissions on behalf of the city, most recently following Superstorm Sandy. The organization's advocacy work has averaged 20 local code reforms annually, while also training thousands of professionals on cutting-edge construction. It has averaged over 30% annual growth in staff size and budget for the last seven years.

We are looking for a COO to help bring us to the next level of impact and efficiency. The COO will manage our finances, oversee major revenue-generating programs, and bring metric-based goal setting to our planning and program evaluations.

The COO will oversee GPRO and Energy Code training, which already provide almost $1MM in revenue and account for over 35 percent of our income, and have tremendous potential for growth.

GPRO is a series of courses for building contractors, trades, operators, and managers that ensures that the people actually constructing and running buildings are familiar with green building concepts, and the key issues that impact their sector. Now taught in six states, GPRO has taught over 5,000 students in three years, and is poised for enormous national expansion, with scaled impact on construction and operations around the country.

Conquering the Energy Code teaches New York State architects and engineers the basics of sustainable design and strategies to comply with ever more stringent energy codes. The program is funded by a $1MM three-year contract from the NY State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and may be renewed in subsequent years.

About the Position

Part of the senior management team, the COO will oversee Urban Green’s finances and operations and have P&L responsibility for GPRO, energy code training and other earned-income initiatives. The COO will have four direct reports including the Director of Education Development, Manager of Education Outreach & Delivery, Manager of Operations, and a part-time Accounting Consultant.

Nimble and rapidly growing, Urban Green Council requires a COO who is flexible, resourceful, independent, and committed to sustainability.  This position will provide the qualified candidate with broad latitude to shape the field of green building and direct one of the region’s most impactful environmental organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the COO will work closely with the Executive Director in implementing Urban Green’s vision and goals. The COO will provide leadership throughout the organization, ensuring sound financial, program, administrative, and personnel management. The COO's responsibilities include:

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Oversee financial and administrative controls necessary to safeguard assets and ensure integrity in financial reporting, including Audit
  • Lead the annual planning process, including the development of budgets, goals and metrics (financial and programmatic)
  • Oversee all financial reporting including projections, variance reports, and special analyses; serves as senior staff liaison to the Board Finance & Audit Committee

Earned-income Program Management

  • Oversee GPRO business development and marketing, including annual P&L responsibility
  • Oversee deployment of NYS energy code training for architects and engineers
  • Oversee other earned-income programs as required
  • Supervise the Director of Education Development, Manager of Education Outreach & Delivery

Office/Personnel Management

  • Supervise the Office Manager and part-time Accounting Consultant
  • Working with our database manager, ensure optimal integration of operations and financial practices with our CRM, Salesforce
  • Ensure smooth functioning of the office, including IT
  • Ensure policies and procedures are updated on a regular basis
  • Oversee selection/orientation of new staff members
  • Supervise annual staff evaluations and provide opportunities for professional development

Other

  • Together with the Executive Director, liaise with the Board of Directors, attending meetings of the Board, Executive Committee, and Finance & Audit Committee
  • Along with other senior staff, represent the organization externally in front of major supporters and funders

Required Qualifications/Skills

  • At least 10 years’ related experience, ideally serving in a senior management role in a start-up or high growth organization
  • Demonstrated analytic and financial planning ability, ideally with prior P&L responsibility
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to manage and inspire staff and to work well in groups
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Creativity, energy, confidence, integrity, initiative, and independence
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related field, ideally an MBA
  • Familiarity with the real estate and/or construction industries
  • A passion for environmental issues

Compensation

Competitive salary in the low six figures, commensurate with experience.

GREEN BUILDING OUTREACH MANAGER

Advance the green building movement nationwide through education.

Urban Green Council, the local affiliate of the U.S. Green Building Council, seeks a marketing professional to advance the green building movement through education programs. The Manager will have a direct impact on the green building movement, driving the advancement of the construction industry in the United States. With U.S. buildings consuming over 40% of the nation’s energy, this position offers the opportunity to play a critical role in cutting the nation’s carbon emissions and leading the building industry towards sustainability.

GPRO is Urban Green’s flagship education program, teaching construction workers and building operators what they need to know about green building to ensure building performance matches design. With consistent high ratings and only 5,500 trained in an industry of hundreds of thousands, the program is poised for enormous expansion.

About the Position

The Manager will bring GPRO to local and national organizations, including unions, building owners, real estate companies, construction trade unions, USGBC chapters, contractors, subcontractors, and associations. The ideal candidate will have proven sales and negotiating skills, an outgoing and flexible attitude, a strong interest in the building/construction industry, and a high attention to detail. S/he will be a self-starter with the ability to think through problems and identify forward-thinking solutions. This position offers some travel and will allow the right marketing or business growth professional the opportunity to take the industry’s most impactful education programs to new heights and horizons. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of an annual marketing plan and manage execution of ongoing marketing activities for GPRO and energy code training
  • Increase GPRO student volume at least 20% annually
  • Oversee the delivery of energy code training to 5,000 design professionals
  • Supervise two staff members who oversee course delivery and logistics
  • Work with the COO on annual business planning, including budgets and sales projections

Required Qualifications/Skills

The ideal candidate will have experience in the building/construction industry, proven sales and negotiating skills and a strong attention to detail. Additionally, s/he will be a self-starter with the ability to think through problems and identify forward-looking solutions.

  • Experience in sales planning, successfully meeting sales goals, project and account management, customer database/CRM (Salesforce preferred), and competence in MS Office
  • Minimum of three years related work experience
  • Strong communication, writing and interpersonal skills (a writing exercise may be required)
  • Proven experience working on fast-paced project teams
  • Proven interest in and understanding of green building and environmental issues
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Proven ability to follow-through on long- and short-term goals
  • Experience with continuing education programs (preferred)

About Urban Green Council’s Educational Programs

GPRO (www.gpro.org) is a series of courses and exams that teach the people who build, renovate and maintain buildings the principles of sustainability and trade-specific green construction knowledge. It fills a critical gap in the world of green building by completing the circle between green design, construction and operations, engaging audiences who are not otherwise reached by the case-study seminars typical of green building education. GPRO is delivered via GPRO Delivery Partners, which include USGBC chapters, building trade unions, employers, workforce development organizations and community colleges.

Conquering the Energy Code is a series of courses that teach Architects and Engineers the basics of sustainable design and strategies to comply with ever more stringent energy codes. These courses will find engaging ways to motivate participants to incorporate sustainability into their design process.

ADVOCACY & RESEARCH INTERN
